The found object is a fragment of the dismantled inscription “House of the Artist.” These Soviet-era concrete letters were removed from the building of the Artists’ Union in Krasnoyarsk—not for restoration, but to be discarded. It was at the dump that Aurora Lotton discovered them. In place of these once monumental, solid symbols, a small plastic sign now hangs—marking the Krasnoyarsk regional branch of the Union of Artists of Russia.
The formalism of the modern administrative sign is cut away by an artistic gesture. Within the preserved letters lives not only a lost fragment of the building’s history but also the artistic practice as a living condition. Only one word is chosen for the work — distilling the essence and shedding all excess.
